PVC containers were forbidden to use for packaging of organic products

The law “on organic products and amendments to certain legislative acts of the Russian Federation” is posted on the official portal of legal information, Interfax reports.

The document was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 3, 2018. The document comes into force on January 1, 2020.

The law introduces the definition of organic products, prohibits its production on the same equipment as conventional products, as well as the mixing of organic and inorganic products during storage and transportation. It is forbidden to use packaging, consumer and transport containers that can lead to contamination of organic products and the environment, including the use of polyvinyl chloride (PVC, used for the production of pipes and window profiles) for packaging, consumer and transport containers.

In accordance with the law, a Unified register of organic producers will be created, it will be conducted in electronic form by the Ministry of agriculture. It is determined that the right to mark organic products with a special sign will be given to those manufacturers who have confirmed the compliance of their products with the requirements for environmentally friendly products.

According to the international Federation of ecological agriculture for 2015, 43 million hectares of agricultural land were used for organic agriculture in the world.

Over the past 15 years, the world market for organic products has grown almost 5 times — from $ 18 billion. up to 82 billion dollars. – and today it is 10% of the total world food market. According to experts, by 2022 the organic market will exceed $ 200 billion.

According to the national organic Union, 179 countries are currently developing organic agriculture, it employs more than 2 million producers. 89 countries have their own laws in the production and turnover of organic products. Annual production growth is 12-15% per year, and is projected to continue until 2025.

Russia occupies 0.2% of the world market of organic products, but has great potential for expanding their production.
